The sample used for this confirmation was collected by the state animal disease control department. The source of the infection was a wild duck that was rescued in an urban area and subsequently sent to the Guaira City Zoo; the city falls under the jurisdiction of the Barretos Regional Agricultural and Livestock Regulatory Authority.
Following the confirmation, officials conducted epidemiological investigations and proactive inspections at three poultry farms within a 10-kilometer radius of the outbreak site. At the same time, the Guaira City Zoo was placed under lockdown, with ongoing implementation of various health monitoring measures, and the zoo’s technical director was briefed on the full set of standard disposal procedures.
2 Diverging Trends in Poultry and Swine Production Costs in Brazil
According to a monthly survey by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation’s Institute of Swine and Poultry (Embrapa Suínos e Aves), Brazil saw a trend of rising production costs for broiler chickens and falling production costs for live hogs in June.
Broiler chicken production costs in Paraná State rose by 0.55% compared to May, while live hog production costs in Santa Catarina State fell by 0.36% month-over-month. In June, broiler production costs in Paraná State stood at 4.71 reais per kilogram, up 0.55% from May. In Santa Catarina State, production costs for live hogs fell from 6.23 reais per kilogram in May to 6.21 reais per kilogram in June, a decrease of 0.36%.
According to Cepea data, prices for premium pork carcasses and chilled chicken at the Greater São Paulo wholesale market in July fell compared to the average prices in June. Affected by these price trends, the cost-effectiveness advantage of chicken relative to pork has weakened. Researchers noted that, compared to the same period in July 2025, chicken’s competitiveness relative to pork has declined by nearly 70%. The agency stated that the root cause of chicken’s weakened competitiveness against pork over the past year lies in the sharp decline in pork carcass prices. Currently, the actual price of Brazilian pork carcasses has fallen by a cumulative 33.2% compared to July of last year.
