The weaning time of suckling pigs and the issues that should be paid attention to during weaning
Traditional pig farming in my country. Piglets are mostly weaned at 60 days of age, the lactation period is too long, and the annual number of piglets produced by sows is small. In developed countries, pigs are mostly weaned at 21-28 days of age or earlier to improve the reproductive rate of sows. At present, pig farms of all sizes in my country do not have the equipment and feed conditions required for early weaning. It is generally more appropriate for piglets to be weaned at 28-35 days of age. At this time, piglets have basically adapted to the feed and environmental conditions, with a higher breeding rate and more uniform development.
The following issues should be noted when weaning piglets:
  1. Control the number of breastfeedings from 4-6 days before weaning, gradually reduce from 4-5 times on the first day to complete weaning, so that both mother and child have an adaptation process.
  2. On the day of weaning, the sow should be isolated and the piglets should be kept in the original pen for a period of time to avoid the double stimulation of weaning and environmental changes to the piglets, which may cause iron disease.
  3. After weaning, continue to feed the same piglet feed as before weaning and provide sufficient clean drinking water. At the same time, avoid weighing, castration, injection of skin vaccine, etc., which may cause stimulation to the piglets
  4. Increase the amount of vitamin E in the feed to improve the piglets' ability to resist stress.
