The Philippines plans to launch an African swine fever vaccine in September, the vaccine originated
The Department of Agriculture of the Philippines announced plans to launch an African swine fever (ASF) vaccine in September to mitigate the devastating impact of the disease on the domestic pig industry. The department said it has allocated a budget of 350 million pesos for the ASF vaccine.
The planned vaccine originated in Vietnam and was developed by AVAC Vietnam, which has been used in Vietnam for two years.
The specific promotion work is under the responsibility of the Philippine Livestock Industry Bureau and will be carried out in stages, with priority given to farms in red and pink zones, and priority given to eligible commercial farms, semi-commercial enterprises and cluster backyard farms. The initial stage will be limited to six months of use under government supervision to ensure its safety and effectiveness.
The Philippine Department of Agriculture expects that 150,000 doses of AVAC's live ASF vaccine will arrive in the Philippines in the third quarter of 2024. The vaccine is suitable for pigs over four weeks old and is recommended for a single dose, with a protection period of at least five months.
