Latest status of the U.S. swine industry
According to a report released on September 28 by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), the Agricultural Statistics Council, and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), as of September 1, 2023, the total number of pigs on U.S. farms was 74.3 million, an increase from the same period last year. There was a slight increase and an increase of 2% compared to June 2023. Among them, 68.2 million are fattening pigs and 6.08 million are breeding sows. In the summer of 2023, the supply of weaned piglets will be 34.2 million, with an average number of weaned piglets per litter of 11.61. In addition, the breeding volume is expected to be 2.93 million heads from September to November 2023 and 2.91 million heads from December to February 2024. Among state inventories, Iowa ranks first with 24.4 million head, followed by Minnesota and North Carolina with 8.7 million and 8 million head, respectively.
