Denmark, a major pork consumer, encourages people to go vegetarian
Denmark, one of the world's largest pork producers and consumers, is working hard to reduce national meat consumption through a series of measures and encourage people to choose a healthier and more environmentally friendly plant-based diet.
Data released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations show that Denmark’s per capita meat consumption in 2020 is about 63 kilograms, and the pig industry accounts for a very high proportion of the country’s total agricultural output value. However, livestock farming and meat consumption create significant carbon emissions that adversely affect climate change.

To solve this problem, the Danish government released a 40-page document in October this year, aiming to promote plant-based diets and encourage local companies to produce more vegetables and protein products that replace meat. The document covers many links in the food production chain, and has designed corresponding subsidy measures for food industries that contribute to energy conservation and emission reduction, such as organic vegetable processing and the search for dairy alternatives.
In recent years, Kebres, a Danish agricultural worker, has been trying to introduce plant-based diets to all walks of life. He has held vegetarian food festivals, taught chefs how to cook plant-based protein foods, and even taught people how to cook beans on a Danish dating show. In addition, a number of non-governmental organizations have emerged in the country dedicated to promoting a vegetarian lifestyle. They are promoting various technologies in a targeted manner and developing vegetarian products that better meet local needs.
However, there is considerable resistance to promoting vegetarianism. Kebres said that Europe has a long history of eating meat, and many people still maintain the ancient human instinct to eat meat to survive. Although Denmark once promoted the production of plant-based foods, data shows that more than half of the Danes Not interested in a plant-based diet. Based on relevant industry data in the country, the promotion of plant-based diets in Denmark will affect the development of the meat industry, making it even more difficult to promote plant-based diets.
Despite the difficulties, the Danish government and relevant people are still working hard to promote this lifestyle, and their efforts to speed up scientific research in related industries and promote healthy lifestyles can also provide reference and inspiration for other countries.
