African swine fever returns, meat supply tight in the Philippines
African swine fever poses a threat to the Philippines' pork supply, and in the months leading up to Christmas, it becomes particularly important to expand other sources of protein such as chicken and fish. According to the Philippine National Meat Inspection Bureau, as of August 26, the Philippines' frozen pork inventory was 60,000 tons, of which 98% was imported; the frozen chicken inventory was 32,000 tons, of which 68% was imported. In the first half of this year, the Philippines' meat imports increased by 10% year-on-year to 650,000 tons. Among them, chicken imports were 220,000 tons, an increase of 4.1%; pork imports were 320,000 tons, an increase of 11%. The Philippine agricultural organization "Rural Reconstruction Movement" said that the Philippines needs to reduce its dependence on meat imports and focus on local production, especially increasing the proportion of aquaculture in fish supply relative to marine fishing.
